Love and Fashion Friday!

A question that is repeatedly asked during the cold winter months: How can I prevent dry and brittle hair? Of all the seasons we experience, winter is the harshest on your hair. Added to the weather is the use of scarves, hats and coats which rub on our hair and causes breakage. However, here are a few things you can do to help your tresses survive the ongoing polar vortex:

1. Hydrate from the inside out. Water is essential to combating dryness in our hair. Drink plenty of water daily to ensure your strands (and body) are properly nourished. Wash hair at least once a week to cleanse the scalp and add moisture. Another tip to keep your hair moisturized is to spritz your hair with water on a daily basis. My favorite spritz is half aloe vera juice and half water mixed together. Aloe vera helps to keep my hair soft, reduce tangles and is a wonderful benefit overall. Look it up!

2. Save those ends! In the cold months, it is even more important to wear a protective style that prevents breakage and helps lock in moisture. This is important since our hair ends are the oldest part of our hair and air in the winter can be very drying. Hair can be worn in buns, twists, braids, tuck and rolls, wigs and weaves. These styles help encourage low manipulation of the hair on a daily basis. You can accessorize your hair with pins, combs, headbands and clips. Be creative! There is a lot of inspiration on the web and on YouTube.

3. Turn off the heat. Cut down the use of hot styling tools to once a week. Although using these tools can give you sleek hair and bouncy waves, they can suck moisture out of your hair and possibly cause damage. If you must use a hot styling tool, make sure to protect your tresses with a protective styling product which will keep heat damage at bay.

4. Make butter and cream your best friend. No, I’m not talking about the things we like to eat, lol. Use natural oils, butters and creams that can add and retain moisture into the hair. Deep condition once a week to add in moisture and help strengthen your hair. Natural butters and oils such as shea, coconut and vitamin E are highly recommended by many to help seal in moisture.

I hope these tips help and you’ll start to see better results!
